In childhood, our visual system develops, especially in the first five years of life. It is important for all children to have an eye examination by the age of 3. Vision loss in childhood is called as amblyopia. Amblyopia can be prevented or decreased with early intervention and treatment. Sometimes a cause of amblyopia is strabismus.

Strabismus is any misalignment of the eyes. It is estimated that 4% of the U.S. population has strabismus. There are many different types of strabismus. Strabismus is most commonly described by the direction of the eye misalignment. This is a photograph of a child with infantile esotropia (eyes turning inward). Treatment for amblyopia and strabismus can be helped with glasses or patching or muscle surgery. After a complete evaluation of your child, I will discuss which treatment plan is the best option for your child’s diagnosis.
